FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Welcome to the Voltronics Cape FAQ page, where you'll find answers to common questions about our services, expertise, and client support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you need from me when I bring something in for repair?
The more information we receive, the better equipped we are to support you. Details such as the how the faulty unit behaves, along with connection diagrams, greatly assist us in replicating the fault on our test bench. If we cannot replicate the issue you are encountering, we must conduct a thorough component-level inspection. This process is more time-consuming as it increases cost and poses a higher risk to not achieving success. Site visits conducted by our Breakdowns department also contribute to our data gathering efforts and reduce overall costs.
Why do you prefer sending a technician to the site instead of me bringing in a unit I suspect is faulty?
Sending a technician to the site is sometimes more advantageous to confirm the machine's fault. If a unit is misdiagnosed and brought in for bench testing unnecessarily, it consumes additional time and costs for our clients, potentially requiring a site visit anyway. Beyond verifying the issue, a site visit allows us to gather comprehensive information, streamlining the repair process and cutting overall expenses. Moreover, it often reveals the root cause of the initial damage, enabling us to address it and minimise future downtime effectively.
Are there instances where site visits are unnecessary?
Certainly, in many cases, our clients have accurately diagnosed their own machines or have employed electricians to pinpoint the faulty component. They provide us with detailed information about the nature of the fault and, if available, connection diagrams. This allows us to replicate the issue during bench testing effectively.
What is your repair success rate?
Quantifying our success rate is challenging since we don't track it daily. Like any industry, we have limitations, but we strive to maximise our coverage with available resources and continuously expand them. Challenges arise in areas with limited information, obsolete parts without substitutes, faulty microcontrollers with no replacements, or insufficient time for necessary research. In such cases, we typically have contingency plans to ensure our clients are promptly operational again.
Do you work on TVs and Microwaves?
We specialise exclusively in industrial equipment and do not service domestic appliances.
How long does a repair take?
The duration of repairs depends on the scope of work and the availability of replacement parts. We maintain an extensive in-house stock system and collaborate with both local and international partners for components we don’t carry. In cases where parts are unavailable within a reasonable timeframe, we leverage our expertise to consider alternative solutions. When providing a quote, we typically outline the expected repair hours and estimate the lead time for components.
Do your repairs come with a guarantee?
We provide a one-year guarantee on our workmanship.
What does your workmanship guarantee cover?
Our workmanship guarantee covers the quality of replacement parts and the soldering and desoldering processes. However, as circuits can have numerous components, we cannot guarantee that another component won't fail during the warranty period. If such an issue arises, we conduct a thorough investigation to determine if our workmanship could have contributed to the problem. We only absolve ourselves of responsibility after confirming no link between our repair and the subsequent failure, and ruling out all other potential causes.
Exclusions to our guarantee include incorrect installation by a third party, over-voltage on the incoming supply line, and overcurrent due to mechanical issues or short circuits from another failed device that may have affected the repaired unit.
Do you charge for unsuccessful repairs?
We specialise in our field and charge for our time, utilising equipment accumulated through years of experience. Given the labor-intensive nature of our quoting process, we have a minimum inspection fee. If we identify a repair with substantial risk, we will notify you in writing beforehand. If you choose to proceed despite the risks, the full quoted price will apply, irrespective of the outcome.
Do you repair Uninterruptible Power Supplies and home Inverters?
No, we don’t. We refer all enquires to Alonzo Mei of Smint Technology 0825202021. Email address: alonzo@sminttechnology.
How soon can I expect to receive a repair quotation?
Each repair is distinct, so the turnaround time can vary. Generally, we strive to evaluate and provide a quotation within two to three days, with an expedited service option available. The duration hinges on factors such as the circuit's complexity, the available information, and sourcing replacement parts.
Can you read and program E-proms?
Yes, we can on a wide range.
Can you change a surface mount microprocessor?
In most cases, yes.
Can you replace BGAs?
Not yet, however we are working on it.
Can you do PIC Programming?
Yes.
Can you program Arduino?
Yes.
Do you offer a collection and a delivery as part of your service?
Yes, we do offer this service.
Are you available 24 hours a day?
We have normal operating hours from 8am to 5pm, however we do offer an emergency service for after-hours breakdowns and bench repairs.
Is there a minimum order quantity when it comes to design and manufacture?
We do prototype designing with minimum quantities depending on the size of the PCB.
When it comes to upgrading a machine, can you proceed with limited information?
Certainly, our extensive experience in the industry enables us to employ the latest technology for enhancing old and outdated machines. Often, we do not require detailed knowledge of previous methods, as they may be constrained by older technology. However, we are also capable of integrating with older technology when a complete system overhaul is not necessary.
